INTRODUCTION
WORD GALLERY is an educational program designed
to help children associate the printed word with the
object it describes. It provides a set of colorful
word-object flashcards. Children, aged 4 to 7, will
enjoy watching the screen fill with color as they match
the words with their pictures.
WORD GALLERY looks best on VGA or EGA equipped systems.
It will also run on systems with MCGA and CGA displays.
Use of a mouse input device is optional.
The program consists of four separate "GAMES" or
"LEVELS".
LEVEL 1
When the child selects a picture, it will be colored
and its word will be displayed. This level should be
used first until the child becomes familiar with all
the words and pictures.
LEVEL 2
The computer will display a word at the top of the
screen, and when the child selects the picture
described by that word, the picture will be colored.
LEVEL 3
The computer will display a picture and when the child
selects the word which describes the picture, the
picture will be colored.
LEVEL 4
The computer will highlight one of the pictures and put
the word which describes the picture at the top of the
screen. The word, however, will be missing one of the
letters. When the child types the missing letter on
the keyboard, the picture will be colored and its
complete word displayed.
In all levels, when all the pictures on the screen have
been colored, a song will play.
LICENSE
WORD GALLERY is NOT public domain or free software.
This program is distributed as "Shareware". WORD
GALLERY is (C) Copyright 1989 by David C. Swope. All
rights reserved.
The owner of WORD GALLERY, David C. Swope, permits the
copying and transfer of the WORD GALLERY program to
others, under the following conditions:
1. No fee shall be charged for copies of any portion of
the WORD GALLERY program, its documentation, or other
information contained on the WORD GALLERY diskette. A
charge for the copying service and media is allowed as
long as this charge does not exceed $8.00.
2. The recipient receives an unmodified copy of all the
WORD GALLERY files, including this document.
3. Any copy of WORD GALLERY transferred to another may
contain only the eight files listed here: WG.EXE,
WGMANUAL.DOC, WGFONT.000, WGFONT.001, WGFONT.002,
WGWORDSE.000, WGWORDSM.000, and WGWORDSC.000.
Additional files which are supplied to registered users
may not be transferred to others without the written
consent of the author.
Any copy of WORD GALLERY sold or copied in such a
manner as to violate the above conditions shall be
subject to a royalty fee of $50.00.
The author encourages the copying and transfer of the
program to others so that it may be evaluated by as
many interested users as possible. After the
evaluation period, it is expected that the users either
register their copy of the program or discontinue using
it.
REGISTRATION INFORMATION
The cost of user registration is $15.00. This
registration fee provides you with the following
benefits:
1. It licenses you to operate the WORD GALLERY program
on any computer at a single location. You may have
copies on more than one computer as long as there is no
possibility of it being used in more than one place at
the same time. You may make copies of the WORD GALLERY
commercial version for backup purposes only.
2. It provides you with a second set of 50 words to be
used with the WORD GALLERY program. It will also
provide you with the commercial version 1.00 of WORD
GALLERY.
3. It will put you on the mailing list to receive
information about additional word sets and WORD GALLERY
updates when they become available. The additional
word sets and updates will only be available to
registered users. They will not be included in future
shareware versions of the program. It is planned to
release the words in sets of 50 at a cost of $5.00 per
set. Mailings will also inform you when other
educational programs by the author are released.
4. It will provide you with information on how to
report problems or get assistance from the author.
Educational institutions may reduce the registration
fee to $12.00 if five or more registrations are
purchased. If more than one registration is purchased
then only one copy of WORD GALLERY will be mailed. The
user may make the additional copies of the WORD GALLERY
diskette. Students may be given copies of the program
for home use as long as the rules outlined in the
LICENSE section are followed.
I encourage you to support the "Shareware" method of
software distribution by becoming a registered user.
Every registration received will help convince the
author to produce more word sets and to enhance this
program in other ways. A registration form is provided
at the end of this document.
Whether or not you decide to register your copy of the
program, the author would like to receive your comments
and constructive criticism on the program. This will
allow me to make the program more useful as a teaching
aid. These same comments will also be used when
designing other educational games in the future.
IN THE FUTURE
Additions are already being planned for WORD GALLERY.
Updates will be available to registered users only and
will not be part of future shareware versions of the
program. Two new levels are planned for the next
update. One of these levels will ask the child to
completely spell the words and another will play a game
similar to hangman. The cost of this update will be
$5.00 if one or more additional word sets are purchased
at the same time, or $7.50 if purchased separately.
Registered users will be notified when the update is
available.
DISCLAIMER
WORD GALLERY is supplied as is. No representation of
any kind is made as to the use and/or suitability of
this program for any purpose. David C. Swope assumes
no liability for any damages direct or consequential,
which may result from the use of this program. The
author of WORD GALLERY reserves the right to update the
contents of the WORD GALLERY program and its associated
documentation at his discretion and without the consent
of or any obligation to any registered users.
REQUIRED EQUIPMENT
WORD GALLERY will run on most IBM or compatible
computers with color graphics capability, at least 256
KB RAM, PC-DOS or MS-DOS 2.1 or greater and one disk
drive. A hard disk and mouse are optional.
MS-DOS is a registered trademark of Microsoft
Corporation. PC-DOS is a registered trademark of IBM
Corporation.
GETTING STARTED
Before attempting to use the WORD GALLERY program,
please make a backup copy of the WORD GALLERY diskette.
Consult your DOS manual for instructions on performing
this procedure.
If your system includes a mouse input device, then the
mouse driver must be installed before the WORD GALLERY
program is run. Consult your mouse user's guide for
instructions on loading the mouse driver.
WORD GALLERY will operate in one of three graphics
modes depending upon your system's display adapter:
1. 640 X 350 16 colors VGA or EGA adapter.
2. 320 X 200 256 colors MCGA adapter.
3. 320 X 200 4 colors CGA adapter.
The proper mode is automatically selected.
In order to run the WORD GALLERY program the picture
and support files must be in the current directory so
they can be used by the program. If you know which
display adapter you have then you may remove the
unnecessary picture files. The necessary files are
described below.
WG.EXE The WORD GALLERY program.
WGMANUAL.DOC This document.
WGFONT.000 These three files are graphics text
WGFONT.001 fonts.
WGFONT.002
WGWORDSE.000 Word set file for VGA and EGA adapters.
WGWORDSM.000 Word set file for MCGA adapters.
WGWORDSC.000 Word set file for CGA adapters.
All but three of these files must be located in the
same directory. The three files which are not needed
are: WGMANUAL.DOC, and the two word set files which do
not match your display adapter.
To install the program on a hard disk, simply copy all
needed files (see above) to a single directory on the
hard disk.
To run the program, set the current directory to the
directory in which the files are located. Type "WG" (do
not type the quote characters), and press the ENTER
key. After the program is loaded, a title page will
appear. When you are ready to begin the program, press
any key.
MAIN MENU
The main menu will be displayed when the title page is
cleared or when the user exits from any LEVEL. This
menu allows the user to select the desired options and
also to end the program. Selections may be made with
the keyboard or with a mouse. Each option has a
command button on which is printed the key which must
be pressed to select that option. If a mouse is used,
then simply point to the command button and press any
mouse button. When all options have been set as
desired, then press the "GO" command button with the
mouse or press the F9 key. The details of each LEVEL
will be described later. The meaning of each command

LEVEL 1
When this LEVEL is entered, the pictures will be
displayed and the program will then wait for a picture
to be selected or for the MENU command to be selected.
To select a picture, the user must press any mouse
button while pointing to the picture or press the
number key which is printed on the bottom of the
picture. When the picture is selected, the program
will color the picture and place its word at the bottom
of the picture. When all pictures have been selected
and colored, the program will play a song (if the songs
option has been selected). When the song finishes, the
next screen of pictures will be displayed and the
sequence continues. Pressing the F1 key or the MENU
command button in the upper right corner of the screen
with the mouse will terminate the LEVEL and return the
program to the MAIN MENU described above.
LEVEL 2
When this LEVEL is entered, the pictures will be
displayed and then the program will display a word
which describes one of the pictures at the top of the
screen. The program will then wait for the picture
described by the word to be selected or for the MENU
command to be selected. To select a picture, the user
must press any mouse button while pointing to the
picture or press the number key which is printed on the
bottom of the picture. If the correct picture is
selected, the program will color the picture and place
its word at the bottom of the picture. If two wrong
pictures are selected in a row, the program will
highlight the correct answer. When all pictures have
been colored, the program will play a song (if the
songs option has been selected). When the song
finishes, the next screen of pictures will be displayed
and the sequence continues. Pressing the F1 key or the
MENU command button in the upper right corner of the
screen with the mouse will terminate the LEVEL and
return the program to the MAIN MENU described above.
LEVEL 3
When this LEVEL is entered, the words will be displayed
and then the program will display a picture which is
described by one of the words in the center of the top
row of items on the screen. The program will then wait
for the word which describes the picture to be selected
or for the MENU command to be selected. To select a
word, the user must press any mouse button while
pointing to the word or press the number key which is
printed on the bottom of the box containing the word.
If the correct word is selected, the program will draw
the picture in the word's box, color it and place its
word at the bottom of the picture. If two wrong words
are selected in a row, the program will highlight the
correct answer. When all pictures have been drawn and
colored, the program will play a song (if the songs
option has been selected). When the song finishes, the
next screen of words will be displayed and the sequence
continues. Pressing the F1 key or the MENU command
button in the upper right corner of the screen with the
mouse will terminate the LEVEL and return the program
to the MAIN MENU described above.
LEVEL 4
When this LEVEL is entered, the pictures will be
displayed and then the program will display the word
which describes one of the pictures at the top of the
screen. The word, however, will be missing one of its
letters. The picture described by the word will be
highlighted and the word with the letter missing will
be printed below the picture. The program will then
wait for the missing letter to be entered at the
keyboard or for the MENU command to be selected. If the
correct letter is entered, the program will color the
picture and place its complete word at the bottom of
the picture. If two wrong letters are selected in a
row, the program will print the complete word at the
bottom of its picture. When all pictures have been
colored, the program will play a song (if the songs
option has been selected). When the song finishes, the
next screen of pictures will be displayed and the
sequence continues. Pressing the F1 key or the MENU
command button in the upper right corner of the screen
with the mouse will terminate the LEVEL and return the
program to the MAIN MENU described above.
